A Look Back, a Windowsill in Rome

A Look Back, a Windowsill in Rome

We’re back from our three weeks in Rome, which you may have been following along with on my Instagram. You’ll be seeing a few more photos here and there, but otherwise, life, the blog, and everything, will resume its normal course. I’m actually looking forward to returning to work, the day job and the writing. We were back yesterday, have been doing laundry, the grocery shopping, but also, Rob is back at his easel already painting flowers from the Campo de’Fiori, and I have a new essay file opened up and waiting for me to fill it with the written notes I took in Rome.

I’m writing this blog post with a magic bag strung around my neck because three weeks of walking around with a giant camera around one’s neck, coupled with a fascination for looking at ceiling frescoes, turns out does a number on your alignment. But hey, a small price to pay for such a time away.

It’s going to take a while to process all the things we saw, and to get back into the swing of things here at home. But I thought it would be fun to refer back to my post from last year at about this time, and to share a few more windowsill photos. It held my attention the entire time we were there, and looking back, it seems amazing to think about how our lives, Rob’s and mine, are so centred around the rectangle. Of windows, of paintings, and books. And let’s not forget the big screen TV. The light coming through each in their own ways. Siri Hustvedt’s book about paintings is one I love, especially, the title, The Mysteries of the Rectangle. What an amazing thing it was to look at paintings and sculpture every single day for three weeks. My mind has been blown, I gotta say.

I knew even when I was taking photos that later I’d wish I’d taken more of this or that. And I did take a lot of photos of things on my windowsill. But a person can only eat so many pastries and baked goods, right?

Probably the best thing that I did on this trip was to figure out how to edit photos in Lightroom on my iPad, so that I could work on the photos every day rather than coming home and feeling overwhelmed by the several thousand photos I took.

I’m sure you’ll be hearing a lot more about this trip….more about still lifes, angels, windows. But for now, thanks for following along, for bearing with. It means a lot.
